What is Attentive Art?
Attentive Art is a blend of creative exercises, art for self inquiry, solution focused therapy, mindfulness, positive psychology and creative visualisation. It is a mixture of all the modalities I have studied over almost ten years.
Why did I create it?
Having struggled with mental health issues all my life, I’d had enough of feeling rubbish all the time. Why was I so susceptible to anxiety and depression, among other challenging situations and behaviours? In 2013 I moved 150 miles to the town my husband is from. We moved with our then two year old daughter, four weeks before our son was due. I had my hands full and was fully focused on my family. It was a beautiful time but I struggled emotionally. I couldn’t understand why and decided to find out what was going on.
In 2014 I began painting again and this coincided with my psychology studies. The relief I felt from painting and being creative was so big that, armed with my new knowledge and the courage to delve into my past, I realised that psychological and emotional relief was why I had always drawn and painted as a child and into adulthood. I was able to see that points in my life which were particularly challenging were often my most creative. Add to this the methods and practices I’d learnt and I had a powerful method to facilitate healing and change. This is how I live and my life is infinitely better for it.
